I’ll try to figure out how to add some pictures tomorrow night…

We had a great time at the Great Sand Dunes National Park today. We rented some “sand sleds” and climbed the sand hills and sled to the bottom for a few hours. We got sand “everywhere”. Sand in eyes, hair, ears, nose, toes, everywhere…

We followed this with a drive to Durango, Colorado which was somewhat adventurist. We climbed a pass that was over 10,000 feet above sea level. The poor car struggled mightily to make the climb. Then on the way down, there was a 7% down grade for over 10 miles and I nearly got some brake problems. We pulled over to a scenic overlook and let the brakes cool. The scenic overlook was spectacular, looking straight down a mountain into a valley. Sheer cliffs to our side and below us and green meadow and stream at the bottom.

We made one last stop to hike up to a waterfall but had to call it off due to a sudden rain shower. We have had great weather all week with just a little rain during some of the driving, but not during our activities.

Downtown Durango (“allegedly historic”) was a collection of shops and restaurants (all over priced) and I saw nothing overly historic about it. Durango? Meh…

Tomorrow we head to Mesa Verde and then on to Moab, Utah. I’ll try to get pictures up soon.
