Well, travelling to the New York City is an exercise in patience and futility.  I had to make last minute arrangements to go to Poughkeepsie, NY last Friday.  Due to the last minute nature of the trip, I had to fly into Hartford, CT and then fly out of La Guardia back to Lexington, KY late Friday night.

The trip was uneventful until we left Poughkeepsie on Friday afternoon for La Guardia.  I had never driven this route into NYC and we got turned around.  I knew we were going the wrong way when I saw the George Washington Bridge – from the North and from underneath it.  If you are not familiar with NYC, this meant I was now in the northwest corner of Manhatten – not where I wanted to be.  Somehow I missed a turn and ended up here.  Driving in New York is interesting, there are so many roads and they go in a million different directions.  If you aren’t familiar with the path, a mistake is very likely.  The problem here was we were trying to catch a flight.

Well, I finally got us on a path I knew and we hit absolutely stand still traffic near the Tri Borough Bridge.  We had just an hour before our flight and we still needed to return the rental car, check in and go through security.  Well, we made it.  We had trouble finding the rental car return (a company I hadn’t used before) and after some radical, illegal u-turns, we finally made our flight.

They close the door to the aircraft and we thought the adventure was over.  Nope.  After sitting for an hour (not terribly unusual for LGA), they told us that they were having trouble with the cargo.  A little while later, the flight attendant’s hours expired, cancelling the flight.  By this time it was after 11:00pm on Friday.  We stood in line for an hour before we could make new arrangements.  The best they could do was get us to Cincy on Saturday at 6:30pm.  So, I spent Friday night in NYC and took a late Saturday afternoon flight to Cincy (that was delayed).  I then had to rent a car, drive home to Louisville, spent the night, then drove to Lexington the next morning to get my car, leaving the rental there.

It was a lot of fun.  It was good to lose a hole weekend.   We were fortunate, we had the means to make the best of it.  There were some folks that were in bad shape.  Even though the airline tried to take care of some people, there were major problems.  Oh well, I was just inconvenienced.

I forgot to relay a nice story about David last week.  At his awards ceremony last week for baseball, his coach gave a little talk about each player.  For David, he said that David was involved in the play of the year – easily.

Early in the season, David was playing third base and was involved in a “bang-bang” play at the bag.  Davied took a throw from left field as a player rounded second and headed to third.  David caught the ball almost the instant the player arrived at third.  This player basically tried to plow over David, but David took the ball in his bare hand, put it into this glove and tagged the boy – and tagged him hard – square in the chest.  The base runner fell in a heap on the basepath, most definetely “out”!!!

David smiled at the player and tossed the ball to the pitcher.  The best part of it was who he did it to.  That player that David layed into was the best player on the best team in the league.  David showed no fear and helped his team over-achieve this year.  It was a fun baseball season for David.  He has signed up to play baseball this fall.

Allison continues to work at the pool and is putting in a ton of hours.  She is preparing for her State Championships this weekend.

Lisa and Daniel are excited about the new Harry Potter book.  They attended a party late Friday night and were one of the first to get the book.  They are busy reading it and will probably finish it this week.

We can’t believe the summer is coming to an end.   We have a couple more weeks of fun before school.
