First, I apologize for no pictures. The wifi here won’t let me connect anything but a mobile device, so nice on pictures.

Europe is a strange place. Toilets, wifi, showers, they don’t bathe much and no on afraid of germs. Two new examples of that tonight at dinner. Our server brought more bread. Took the one piece still remaining from previous allotment and added to our new bounty with his bare hand. ALS, this 5 star, top dollar restaurant had a dog laying around near the kitchen and by diners. Love it.

Three reviews. Sorrento, Positano and Pompeii

Sorrento and Positano are seaside villages on opposite sides of a single mountain. Sorrento sits atop a very high cliff and the town slopes steeply from there. Positano is the extreme version of this. It starts at the beach and goes straight up with houses on top of each other. You don’t walk in Positano, you either slide or climb.

Sorrento is a typical beach vacation place, only in Italy and you can say the same about Sorrento. It is the geology that is astounding. Again sorry about no pictures.

In Positano we hung out at the beach and got sun burned. Laying on a beach chair with the Mediterranean Sea lapping at your feet is a nice way to spend the day. We hade a late lunch then explored the city and did some shopping. After returning to Sorrento, we climbed down the hill and had a very long, unremarkable dinner.

Today we to toured Pompeii. I had no idea it was so big. Pictures will never do this place justice. 79AD was a long time ago. Keep in mind that is when the disaster occurred. This city existed long before that. Therefore, what we were looking at was mostly pre Christ. Extensive water aqueduct system is what surprised me the most. The infrastructure of the city rivaled a modern world. This place was so well preserved that I often thought it was just an elaborate ruse. It seemed to unreal. Pompeii has been one of the highlights of this trip. I’m very glad we hired a private guide to show us the place. If you are ever in Italy. Don’t miss Pompeii. (Side note. The Catholic rule of Italy from 300AD until the renaissance era really did a number on things. I’m not trying to be hard on Catholics. 2 centuries of Christianity is full of failures and Catholics do not hold a monopoly on that. Ask me about this some time. No time for that dissertation tonight).

After Pompeii we explored Sorrento for a bit before hitting the hotel pool for some relaxation. We then went for an excellent dinner on the waterfront.

The view from our hotel is of the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the background. We have been sleeping with the drapes open because you can see it all from the bed. (Sun comes up early that way…)

Tomorrow we leave for Rome. If I get good wifi I will post some pictures.
